The Journal
A written account of my journey
May, Part 15/16/2022 I have one word to describe the past few weeks: busy. I’ve been at the Town Center almost every day since the beginning of the month, working on every aspect of the experience. Here’s what I’ve done:
The next time I write on here, my project will be done! It’s so crazy to think about. I’m excited to exhibit this week and I’m ready to show the world this part of me!

April, Part 25/1/2022 Having finished an intense month, I am excited to be in the home stretch for my project! I am now bringing things into the space, getting ready to complete every installation. The speakers are set up — they’re amazing. Mr. Sensbach and I are installing the plexiglass in a few days. There was a change of plans with the windows, but Anthony and I have reworked the coverings and I think the overall vibe in the space is still intact. I look forward to keeping The Archive updated and although I’ll be very busy the next few weeks, I know I’m going to love every second of it.
April, Part 14/15/2022 As the last month of my project approaches, I am completely devoted to making sure everything comes together. Here’s what’s happening:
March, Part 23/31/2022 Spring break was a total success. I accomplished my goals: I have my materials, I’ve begun creating all pieces, and I’m in communication with Anthony to schedule a time in the space. Both of our schedules are busy, but I’m sure we will work something out for this week or the next.
I also communicated with Anthony over break about the graphics for the Annapolis Town Center website (which are super cool) and other information he needs. I’ve put together the tour times and a written a full draft of my speech. My next steps are to continue my physical, written, and logistical work. But, I’m worried about the speaker I asked the school to order over a month ago — they were Amazon Prime but I’ve heard nothing about them being ordered or coming in. I’m checking in on that and continuing to fill out reimbursement forms for other materials. March, Part 13/14/2022 Spring break is here! I’ve been looking forward to these two weeks so I can devote my time only to my Fellows project. Last week, Mr. Sensbach and I met to discuss my progress and what I’ll focus on over break. We talked materials, building processes, and timelines. Here are my spring break goals:
I look forward to my next update at the end of the month. Check the Archive for updates along the way! February, Part 22/28/2022 Not much has changed since my last update, except my progress! An order of plexiglass came in the other day, so I’m excited to work with it. I am still experimenting with the bulb fixture — I finally found a way to assemble the strings around the sphere that I like. I’m also making the final decision on paint colors for the column and the planks. More to come in March!
February, Part 12/16/2022 With the spring semester underway, I have been quite busy. I gave my midterm review presentation last week, which went well. I am now devoting my time for Fellows to order the last few materials and continue building and creating. I am excited to document my progress!
January, Part 21/27/2022 January has been my best month yet! As of today, I’ve been to the space three times this month. Here’s what I’ve been doing:
My first visit was a great refresher of the space, since the last time I was there was August. It was a lot smaller than I remembered, which was a relief. Anthony and I reviewed the changes to the space, including painting the walls, adding partitions, and possibly redoing the floors. We also discussed the decoration of the lobby, which I am excited to work on. Throughout this process, but especially this month, Anthony has been extremely generous with his time and resources, and I am so grateful. This week, I came back to tape where the partitions would be, effectively sectioning off the space. I began this process on Tuesday, and finished it today. I also labeled the windows by color — they will be color-blocked in pink, red, orange, and yellow for the final experience. Anthony also confirmed to me today that I am welcome to use an already-built structure as a part of my installation collection. I ended my time in the space today by playing Pyramids and walking through the space as if I was doing the official tour. For the first time, the realization dawned on me that the experience I’ve dreamed about it finally starting to come to life. Moments like that really make the stress and late nights working on my Fellows project worth it. I’m proud of the progress I’ve made and I’m excited to continue my work. January, Part 11/12/2022 So far, 2022 has been very good to my Fellows project. I was able to get my hands on the glass I wanted, and I have more materials on the way. I have sent my full draft to Anthony, and we are meeting at the space next week.
My work is cut out for me: while I completed my winter break goals, I have a few last tasks to take on to complete my fall semester goals. Soon, I will report to Anthony my power estimates — this includes light and sound. I will purchase a speaker and consult Mr. Derbyshire about spotlights to use. Looking into the future, I am going to draft my spring semester goals to fit the scope of my project. I will also complete my project review presentation, which I will present at the beginning of February. December, Part 212/29/2021 I have definitely enjoyed relaxing over winter break, but of course my Fellows work has not stopped! I have been researching and shopping for materials and will continue to do so during the few remaining days until school starts.
I have had successful shopping trips to Home Depot and JoAnns. I purchased a glass light bulb cover, tulle, iridescent cords, and two types of wire. I am narrowing down some options for plexiglass and actual glass that I expect to order in the next two or three days. Unfortunately, the glass Mr. Sensbach recommended to me in our meeting is out of stock; I have had to spend time finding other options. I’m away right now, but when I come home I am eager to work with the materials I have and finish my draft of the exhibit to give Anthony. I will also begin working on my presentation for my review at the end of January. Click on each post title to leave a comment!
