The Project
Why do you like to listen to music? Does calm, contemporary music help you wind down after a long day? Do you listen to popular music from your childhood to remind you of the good old days?
Let me tell you why I listen to music: my vision fills with the most incredible colors every time I hear a note. What I experience is called synesthesia — it’s a cross-wiring of the senses that allows for the experiences I have on a daily basis.
I feel blessed to have this trait, and I want to share it. This is why I am creating an immersive experience for all of you to see the world through my eyes, even if it’s only for a few short minutes. I will use 3D art installations and dramatic lighting to depict what I see when I listen to a certain song, which will play in the room in which the piece is exhibited.
Have you ever wondered what goes on in somebody else's head? Now, you can find out.

The ArtistHello! My name is Elizabeth Biran and I am a senior at Severn School in Severna Park, Maryland. Here are some fun facts about me: I play piano, I have a Bernese Mountain Dog named Duncan, and my favorite Taylor Swift song is "Afterglow."
My first memory of "seeing colors" is when I realized I could see my own voice, which is a bubbly and electric shade of pink. I would later stumble upon the name for this phenomenon in a book, and I've been obsessed with learning about my synesthesia ever since. Since words will never do my visions justice, I've decided to bring them to life with audio-visual art installations. I am honored to be participating in the Van Eney '09 Fellows Program for the 2021-2022 school year and I am so excited to share this part of myself with you. |
